Firefox 3

dundee
I downloaded Firefox 3 yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised that most of the extensions and themes which I use were compatible. The only ones not yet updated were Tab Effect, which looks cool but isn't really essential, and Am I On Myspace.com?, which provides a great warning if you inadvertently stray onto any Myspace pages. How will I cope without this protection?!

For the geekily inclined, the Add-ons I use are:

  1. AdBlock Plus
  2. Colorful Tabs
  3. Download Helper
  4. Facebook Toolbar
  5. FootieFox
  6. ForcastFox
  7. Google Toolbar
  8. IE Tab
  9. PDF Download
  10. Shareaholic
  11. StumbleUpon
  12. TwitterFox
  13. Undo Closed Tab
  14. US English Dictionary
  15. WOT (Web of Trust)

Whoa, that's a lot of extensions! I only use Adblock Plus, Tiny Menu, and "Ubuntu Firefox Modifications"... the default Firefox setup is enough for me most of the time! I use a whole bunch of development-based ones at work too (Firebug is the best thing, ever), but that's about it. For what it's worth, "Undo close tab" isn't required in Firefox 3 (or even later versions of 2), just right click the tab bar and select "Undo Close Tab", or go to History/Recently Closed Tabs/... for a list. :)

PDF Download was brilliant when I was doing my degree and looking at tonnes of scientific papers. I know it's a lot, but I've trimmed down! I do use them all...

I know undo close tab isn't needed, but I close the wrong tab on a depressingly regular basis, and having a handy wee button in the corner is actually really useful. Or I may just be really lazy!

Ha, the last time I used Undo Close Tab it was really new and didn't even have its own button; it was basically the same as what Firefox does now! That was why I thought it was a bit unnecessary :)

My machine (since it runs on Linux and the PDF reader isn't integrated with the browser) downloads PDFs anyway, so that one wouldn't make too much sense to me. Definitely for when you're on Windows though, sounds handy. I hate the Adobe Reader, it's horrid.

Thanks for including WOT on your list of Firefox add-ons. It's even more important these days to take a layered approach to your Internet security. WOT just did a study of the Internet's red-light district and discovered that 31% of dangerous sites are adult content sites. It's so easy to inadvertently stumble upon one of these sites, and you can risk infecting your computer with spyware, viruses, browser exploits, etc. With WOT installed you are warned before you click, saving yourself a lot of grief!

Thanks again,
Deborah

Add ons
Just added your blog to my Google Reader Hedge and couldn't help but comment this post.
I used to have Facebook Boost but took it off, I think I may add the Facebook toolbar that you have.
I can see my first geek post tomorrow night forming in my head!

Re: Add ons
p.s 80% of add ons are now Fx3 compatible (http://alex.polvi.net/2008/06/26/state-of-the-addons-report-80-compatible-by-usage/) =]
