I'm back!

Dreams
Ok so I know I haven't posted here for a while, but moving to Manchester takes a lot out of a girl! I've settled in pretty well to my job I think, everyone is really friendly and good fun, and I know my way around a lab better than I thought I might.
My wee flat in Manc is getting really cosy now that I've unpacked and bought a bit of extra furniture etc. Mum, Dad and J were down last weekend for a visit, we went to the Lowry and did some shopping. It was good fun, and visitors are always welcome, so if anyone fancies a trip to Manchester then let me know! As a caveat though, I must say that next weekend is my only free weekend until January! Book early, book often. Or something like that...

In other news, I went to see Alice Cooper at the SECC in Glasgow a couple of weeks ago. This was the second time I have seen him live, and he was amazing! The support acts were also far superior to last time, Motorhead and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Last time we were fobbed off with Twisted Sister. The only thing that wasn't so great was that it was all standing, and I had a really bad cold and had traveled up from Manchester that afternoon. Still, I had been looking forward to it since April and it didn't disappoint!

IF A MOVIE WAS MADE OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?

 So, here's how it works:

1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, etc).
2. Put it on shuffle.
3. Press play.
4. For every question type the song that's playing.
5. When you go to a new question press the next button.

Inspired by [info]rubiestogo, some song lyrics that I love/mean something special to me:

And it's really not surprising
I hold a force I can't contain

I wear this crown of thorns,
upon my liars chair,
full of broken thoughts,
I cannot repair

You know I love it when the news is bad
Why it feels so good to feel so sad?

It's bitter baby,
And it's very sweet.
I'm on a rollercoaster,
but I'm on my feet.
Take me to the river,
Let me on your shore.
I'll be coming back baby,
I'll be coming back for more.

Stranger things have happened
Both before and after noon
I’m forming I’m warming
Pushing myself
And no I don’t mind asking
Now

From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one
She stared in my eyes and smiled
For her lips were the colour of the roses
That grew down the river, all bloody and wild

The drugs they say are made in California
We love your face
We'd really like to sell you
The cops and queers make good-looking models
I hate today
Who will I wake up with tomorrow?

It's coming through a hole in the air,
from those nights in Tiananmen Square.
It's coming from the feel
that this ain't exactly real,
or it's real, but it ain't exactly there.

Hoover, he was a body remover
I'll give ya a dose
But it'll never come close
To the rage built up inside of me
Fist in the air, in the land of hypocrisy

Sucker love is
Heaven sent you
Pucker up our passions spent
My heart's a tart
Your body's rent
My body's broken
Your's is bent
Carve your name into my arm
Insted of stressed I ly here charmed
'cause there's nothing else to do

Yes and not before time. A list of the bands wot I seen. And stuff.

Saturday

  1. El Presidente - Really good. Didn't know much of their music but really enjoyed it.
  2. Wolfmother - Loud and amazing!
  3. Maximo Park - Alright. Claire loves them though.
  4. Placebo - Brilliant, always wanted to see them. Didn't realise how small he is. They didn't play Pure Morning though, my favourite song.
  5. Kaiser Chiefs - I was surprised how good they were, they put on a good show. I have always been a bit ambivalent towards them but I enjoyed myself.
  6. Goldfrapp - Sadly only played half an hour since Alison had a throat infection, but they were great. Stunning dancers as well.
  7. Red Hot Chili Peppers - The best show I have seen them do (out of 4). A good mix of old and new songs and I knew the words to every one. Sad isn't it...
Sunday

  1. The Upper Room - Nothing special, but quite entertaining.
  2. Fightstar - I really like Fightstar so I enjoyed this a lot. Claire didn't. Mwahahaha! Gets her back for Maximo Park.
  3. The Proclaimers - Genius.
  4. Paulo Nutini - Short (10 minutes) but sweet wee acoustic set.
  5. The Magic Numbers - Perfect gentle mid-afternoon music.
  6. We Are Scientists - Love the name, enjoyed the music.
  7. Dirty Pretty Things - Another surprise, much better than the Libertines who I think were massively overrated. I saw them two years ago at T and left half way through the set because I was bored.
  8. Feeder - Pretty entertaining, although I got sunburnt.
  9. The Automatic - The tent was packed. A classic case of a band getting much bigger between getting booked and playing the festival. Though actually seeing them  might get Monster out of my head, I was sadly mistaken. They were  good though.
  10. The Who - Legends
In other news, I dragged Claire round EVERY charity tent, met Billy Boyd and bought a duck. Not a real one. I called him What. Nobody got the joke. Never mind...

See, I told you they were amazing! Still can't quite believe that Lordi acutally won last night, but I have to say their performance was amazing! Especially the wings and the fire. The video of their performance is here. Watch it and learn, rest-of-Europe.

Yesterday went pretty well I think, although I am notoriously bad at judging these things! The three questions I answered were:

  1. Describe the effects of Legionnaire's disease when compared to Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Cystic Fibrosis patients.
  2. Describe the mode of action of exotoxin and endotoxin and the ways in which exotoxin acts in systemic disease.
  3. Describe the ways in which plasmid DNA and other DNA molecules code for antibiotic resistance in bacteria.
Well something like that anyway - it is all a wee bit of a blur.

Today I have been revising for the other two exams, which are both on Friday. I also bought Stadium Arcadium which is obviously amazing. Now I need to go and revise more before I fall asleep.

There is  bad noise coming from downstairs. I think it is supposed to be a Nirvana tribute band. It is so far from Nirvana (in either sense of the word) that it is in another atlas. I wouldn't mind so much but the bass is sending vibrations through the floor and he is out of time with the drums. And out of tune. The blessing in disguise is that there is a limited number of songs for them to get through.
